This drawing was done many years ago, as I watched my husband and a good friend of his playing chess. At the time, I did not want to deal with the complexity of the pieces on the board, so I left them out, thinking I would come back to them later. But, on seeing the finished piece, my husband thought the empty board was central to understanding the moment, and so, I have never added them.
